KANDAHAAR

real hijack , 1999
Directed by : MAJOR RAVI
Cinematography : Ravi Varmann

The film has got all the contents for a SUPER HIT , but lacks the GRIPPING SCRIPT. Even though said to be inspired from real Kandahaar Hijack story , its  inaccurate (ok i agree thats filmmakers freedom). Even the Indian Airlines depicted is  one which has undergone NEW BRANDING & LOGO change. Bachan was also not so impressive.Cinematography is good , except the miniature climax shots , which looked pathetic.Anyways its great to see Amithabh in Malayalam film . WE EXPECT  BETTER FILMS FROM  DIRECTOR MAJOR RAVI .

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) - Official Trailer / DIRECTOR Kiran Rao's NOTE

Aamir Khan Productions Presents DHOBI GHAT (Mumbai Diaries)

Written & Directed by Kiran Rao

THE FILM

Inside a taxi in the pouring rain of Mumbai, an amateur video camera is shooting the grey city through the misted windows. The cab driver strikes up a conversation with the shy girl behind the camera,Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra), and they find out that they are from neighboring towns back home in Uttar Pradesh. The brief encounter creates a small space of belonging. Shai (Monica Dogra), an affluent investment banker on a sabbatical in Mumbai meets Arun (Aamir Khan), a gifted painter at the opening of his new show. Arun and Shai spend a night together, which later Arun cannot explain and Shai cannot forget. The very next morning they part ways, almost sure they will never meet again. Munna (Prateik), the young and beautiful washerman (dhobi) who delivers clothes to Shai's house, aspires to be a film actor. When he learns of Shai's hobby of photography he agrees to show her the 'real' city in exchange for her shooting his portfolio. Shai discovers the city through his eyes and her lens, and an unlikely friendship develops as Munna can't stop himself from falling in love with her. Meanwhile Arun finds a new apartment where he can resume his silent, reclusive life. In the process of settling in, he stumbles upon a secret that at first he is ready to dismiss, but later finds more and more absorbing: a secret that will find its way into his heart.

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) is the story of four people from very different backgrounds, whose worlds intersect and leave them forever altered. As they find themselves drawn into compelling relationships, the city finds its way into the crevices of their lives, separating them even as it brings them closer...
Fragments of their experience - seen through a naïve video diary, black and white photographic images and painting - form a portrait of Mumbai and its people, bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
KIRAN RAO

Mumbai/Bombay, a concrete island lapped at by grey sea and lashed by torrential rain, is home to fourteen million of us, and more arrive on its shores every day to make their lives and fortunes. The energies of these diverse people and their hopes coalesce into something electric and unique. And so the city has a life of its own - throbbing, vital and inclusive; and this is what inspired the film.

I wrote this script a few years ago with two ideas as starting points for this story of four people adrift in this city.

One grew out of the personal experience I’ve had as a tenant in Mumbai, having had to shift to a new apartment almost every year (due to short term tenancy laws). Every new apartment I moved to always felt a little warm from the last occupant, leading to the idea that I was in some strange way connected to the people that had lived in the space before me and would thereafter. What if they had left behind something that revealed to me their life and secrets?

The second idea was to examine whether it’s really possible in a country riddled with class and caste prejudice for an upper class girl to have a relationship with a boy from a disadvantaged background. While popular Hindi cinema has championed the idea that ‘love conquers all’ for the past 60 odd years, does it in real life?

The film was shot on multiple formats (Super16mm and Mini DV) on real locations in Mumbai, and I was fortunate to work with a talented cast and crew for many of whom this will be a debut. To have Aamir as a producer, actor and collaborator on the film was my great, good fortune, and I owe this film to his unflagging belief and support.

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) is my homage to Mumbai and its people - people on trains, in boats, stuck in traffic, perched on construction sites, sitting by the sea, thinking of tomorrow.

PRODUCER’S NOTE
AAMIR KHAN

When my wife Kiran told me that she was working on a script I was most apprehensive. One of these days the script would be complete and I would have to read it. If the script did not work for me then things would get most uncomfortable between us. Every time she mentioned she was working on it I prayed that she would not complete it, and in time would abandon it. Doesn’t sound like a very supportive husband I’m afraid, but I am known to have a strong survival instinct.

Well, finally the day did dawn when she confronted me with a spiral-bound file.
I figured I needed numbers on my side, someone to back me when I gave it a thumbs-down. With that in mind I suggested we travel to Coonoor where my cousin, and filmmaker, Mansoor lives. "Mansoor and I will hear the script narration together", I said. I have often used Mansoor as a shield, as he has me.

So, Mansoor, Tina (his wife) and I sat down one afternoon to hear the first narration of Dhobi Ghat. From the first scene itself the script just sucked me in. I was falling in love with the characters, loved the dialogue and voice of each person, was struck by the fine, silken threads that made the narrative and was moved to tears by the end.

All three of us loved it, and I fell in love with K, once again.

Kiran has been an absolute delight to work with. As a producer and as an actor,
I feel most safe in her hands. She has clarity, sensitivity and an ability to bring the best out in her team, which makes her a leader I am happy to follow.

I recognize superior talent when I see it and it always makes me happy and it inspires me. When I see that talent in my life partner it makes me feel very
proud and secure.

Kiran’s choice of cast and crew has been most invigorating for someone like me who has been working in films for over two decades. As a producer it is very rare to work with a team, ...ALL of whom are so talented, passionate, committed and with the right attitude towards cinema.

Thank you guys.

Five films for OBAMA , from Bollywood , India.

The talk of the town is the visit of the US President Barack Obama and even Bollywood is all excited about it. Now, the cine folks say that they want Obama to watch five films. They are Lagaan, Munnabhai MBBS, Tere Bin Laden, Raajneeti, Dabangg. The idea behind this is to show Obama the Indian entertainment and the cine folks say that the US president will surely enjoy it if he goes through them. Hope Obama takes this suggestion seriously.

Enthiran & Ayodhya Verdict

Enthiran & Ayodhya verdict both came with much hype , but was like a storm in the coffee cup, nothing much happened. I am happy that direcor Shankar brought some Best  CG ever seen in indian films. Also some Bad CG too...  This is a movie that we must see , for the dir Shankars craft .
PS: I hated the open top merc that resumes its shape & colour after a fatal crash .
