BRILLIANT DIRECTION. MAKES GOOSEBUMPS IN EACH EMOTIONAL SEQUENCE . Of course never compare to Hollywood movies .There are drawbacks in perfection .I personally think this is a low budget , for SUCH A BIG STORY. After directing some 50 movies or more you will get a knowledge of each actors' MAXIMUM capability. IV SASHI did a brilliant casting in DEVASURAM. Like wise, HARIHARAN has also directed nearly 50 films & was keen on giving each ACTOR HIS / HER CAREER BEST. This film is definitely MANOJ K JAYANs , SHARATH KUMARs , PADMAPRIYAS , and others' BEST EVER PERFORMANCE.

PLEASE , WATCH THIS MOVIE IN CINEMA THEATRE TO GET A FEEL THAT IS REALLY WORTH .IF U MISS THIS WAIT FOR THE NEXT DIRECTOR WHO MAKES HIS 50th FILM .

The Hurt Locker

Directed by : KATHRYN BIGELOW
Cinematographer :BARRY ACKROYD

A FANTASTIC MOVIE. IT MAKES YOU SIT AT THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT FROM START TO END. This film about a Bomb Specialist who defuses Bombs in the American occupied Iraq is so well taken. Shot with multi cameras and mostly handheld, with visceral cuttings , the audience gets fully absorbed to the movie.used multiple cameras to capture multiple perspectives, saying, "That's how we experience reality, by looking at the microcosm and the macrocosm simultaneously. The eye sees differently than the lens, but with multiple focal lengths and a muscular editorial style, the lens can give you that microcosm/macrocosm perspective, and that contributes to the feeling of total immersion." Its also emotionally Well packed. I STRONGLY recommend this movie to all my dear FILM LOVERS. A MUST MUST SEE Film . Cheers !!

Unnai Pol Oruvan

Directed by : Chakri Toleti
Background:His father Mr. Thambu happened to be a good friend of directors like K Viswanath, K Balachandar, Bhagyaraj, Bharati Raja and Jandhyala. He used to help the directors in scripts and dialogues. He acted in the role of a photographer boy in Sagara Sangamam movie when I was about 8 years old .He left for the USA to do bachelors in film course in University of Central Florida. He focussed on technology and vfx while doing film course. He joined Disney and worked in VFX department. Now diected his debt in 2 languages with Multi stars.

Cinematographed by :Manoj Soni

Unnai Pol Oruvan & Eenadu(Telungu version ),remake of the film "a Wednesday" ,is a good film. It is a relevant movie made in unique format ( Red One Camera).
‘Unnai Pol Oruvan’ is a story that revolves around a calamitous day where the entire city is shook with a single call from that starts off the thriller drama. A stranger (Kamal) over the top of under-construction building’s terrace makes a call to city commissioner (Mohan Lal) stating that he has planted bombs at various parts of the city.
Now, it’s up to city commissioner for settling down the backbreaking task. Well, the stranger wants to release 4 most wanted terrorists held as prisoners by the government or else he would blast the entire city.
Since, it’s too difficult to go around the city and detonate the bombs, the police department has to go flexible over the stranger’s offer.
But when the terrorists are released, there’s something more shocking for the cops and as well the audiences
I loved the IIT guy who come toaid the police in decoding the strangers' calls .
A MOVIE that makes you happy.

GLADIATOR (2000)

Directed by: RIDLEY SCOTT
Cinematography by : JOHN MATHIESON
Pollice Verso ("Thumbs Down") by Jean-Léon Gérôme —the 19th century painting that inspired Ridley Scott to tackle the project.
Maximus(Russel Crowe),is a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) ,the Emperor of Rome tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone . Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power ,kills the emperor and put blame on Maximus.Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, his wife and child have been murdered by Commodus. He is captured as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role).Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors.
The film features a terrific battle sequence, huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. GLADIATOR is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul.
TRIVIA:Oliver Reed(Proximo)suffered a fatal heart attack during filming. The British,CG company Mill created a digital body double for the remaining scenes involving his character Proximo by photographing a live action body-double in the shadows and by mapping a 3D CGI mask of Reed's face to the remaining scenes during production at an estimated cost of $3.2 million for two minutes of additional footage The film is dedicated to his memory
In Malta, a replica of about one-third of Rome's Colosseum was built, to a height of 52 feet (15.8 meters), mostly from plaster and plywood (the other two-thirds and remaining height were added digitally). The replica took several months to build and cost an estimated $1 million.

CITY OF GOD (2002)

Directed by :FERNANDO MIRELLES ,Kátia Lund (co-director)
Cinematographed by:CESAR CHARLONE

Set in a real life drug and violence- ridden housing project called Cidade de Deus, the story follows two boys who take opposite paths. One chooses to pursue photography, while the other becomes a ruthless drug dealer.Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s.
Technically flawless, this Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time.
All of the amateur actors were recruited from slums in Rio de Janeiro, and a couple of them actually lived in the Cidade de Deus (City of God) itself.
Eventhough nominated for 4 oscars, it failed in getting one. But one can be sure that this film is far better than "SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE" , which also has a similar thread.

The witts played by Maala Aravindan is a highlight of this film.

CINEMA PARADISO (1989)

(Directors cut)
Directed by : GUISEPPE TORNATORE
Cinematography by :BLASCO GIURATO

This film is my personal BEST FILM EVER and its my beloved CLASSIC. A genious like maestro Ennio Morricone blessed this film with a heavenly music .

A celebration of youth, friendship, and the everlasting magic of the movies.
Won Academy Award for best foreign language film (1989), Grand Prix du Jury , Cannes, Golden globe for best foreign language film(1990) , BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language(1990) and many more.

A famous film director receives news from his aging mother in a little town that someone he once knew has passed away. A beautiful story unfolds about his childhood(then called as Toto) at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. Their bond was one that contained many highlights and tragedies, and shaped the way for a young boy to grow and move out of his rundown village to pursue a dream. He is also reminded of his lost teenage love, Elena, who he had to leave before he left for Rome .With the love and guidance of the aging man, Toto navigates the trials of first love and builds on his ever-growing passion for the cinema. Ultimately, it is Alfredo who convinces Toto to leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a director. But as Salvatore thinks back on his youthful romances and his innocent love of movies, he comes to realize that perhaps his success has come at a very high price.
The film also brings the audience through the changes in cinema and the dying trade of traditional film making, editing and screening.

EE PATTANATHIL BHOOTHAM

Directed by : JOHNY ANTONY
Cinematography by :Azhagappan / Uthpal V. Nayanar

A movie which was intended for kids , but unfortunately didn't appeal both the kids and the mass audience. The technicians did gave their average output.Especially the double role sequences ,music and art direction were notable. But the script and Mammookka's acting (as bhootham) is too difficult to digest.Suraaj gave us a little relief.

THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957)

Directed by : INGMAR BERGMAN
Cinematography by: GUNNAR FISCHER

The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet), is one of the SUPREME MASTERPIECES by Ingmar Bergman. a CLASSIC in Direction and Cinematography.
The film is Bergman's stunning allegory of man's apocalyptic search for meaning of life.
After a decade of battling in the Crusades , a knight ANTONIUS BLOCK (played by Max von Sydow),on his return home, encounters Death on a desolate beach . Block, whose war experiences have left him cynical about the existence of God and the afterlife, challenges Death to a fateful game of chess to stall for time to visit his wife and gain some insight into the meaning of life before passing on.
Then Block continues the journey finds solace in a quiet, pleasant picnic of milk and wild strawberries with a family of traveling actors. He invites them to his castle, where they will be safe from the plague.
Halfway through their journey, they come across a witch who is to be burned at the stake. Block asks her both at their first encounter in a village and as she is at the actual stake to summon Satan for him; he wants to ask the Devil about God. Strongly atheistic and cynical, Jöns later tells Block that the witch did not see God or Satan because neither exists.
Much studied, imitated, even parodied, but never outdone, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning, Hero confesses: My whole life has been a meaningless search. The audience gets chilled on Death’s call. We start to think about our lives on seeing such Masterpieces.
Pontifical Council for Social Communications 1995 has included “The Seventh Seal” in The Vatican Film list .
A textbook on the art of filmmaking and a must watch movie.

BHRAMARAM (2009)

Directed by : BLESSY
Cinematographed by : AJAYAN VINCENT

After along time , I am happy to see a real CLASSIC movie in Malayalam.
The story is about a common man Sivankutty (Mohanlal) , who once served a jail term for a murder which his friends committed at an immature age . He forgive them and started a new life as a jeep driver in High range, after the release from jail , but hid his past life from his wife. On knowing that he was in jail for a murder , his wife leaves the house and commits suicide with his daughter.

The film is Hero’s journey to find his old friends who were the actual murderers, and take revenge on them at the tomb of his beloved wife & daughter.

This is a serious movie , But it has melodious songs and stunts and of course thrilling chases . Mohanlal’s acting is beyond our imagination. The character which Lal played is one who hids a heavy sorrow inside and acts like normal , but there are times when he bursts from his own control.Director Blessy also included his usual preaching in the beginning of the movie ,like the necessity of spending time with children etc.. But after that the movie is on a tight grip.
The camera work is excellent with some brilliant camera movements . I loved the highway hotel stunt, especially its introduction , with Mohanlal calling the villains with his toes.
The locations are exotic . The film was shot in Coimbatore , Marayoor, Nelliyampathi etc… There is a scene where the drunken Lal takes a lorry to the edge of a cliff-It makes us breathless. It was shot in Paruthumpaara.
The only flow was the immature baby artist who played Lal’s daughter. The film also conveys some good thoughts that we have to keep in our mind in maintaining a relationship.

This film needs to be seen & appreciated in theatre , if we need more class films in Malayalam .

THAKARA (1980)

DIRECTED BY: BHARATHAN
WRITTEN BY:PADMARAJAN
CINEMATOGRAPHY :ASHOK KUMAR

A Brilliant movie born out of the Bharathan-Padmarajan partnership.
THAKARA tells us the story of a mentally immatured guy (brilliantly acted by Prathap K Pothan) and his tragic romantic affairs with Subhashini , the dream girl ( acted by new comer Surekha). the character of "Chellapanaashari , played by Nedumudi Venu is also one of the most 'original' characters in the Malayalam movie.
"Thakara" is an orphan. He is energetic , happy and clean hearted. And everyone in the village exploits him in some ways , even the Subhashini exploited him in the name of love.Thakara was betrayed by the words of chellapanassary and indulges in romance with the heroine. Her father a heartless fellow (played by K.G.Menon) finds out their relation and beats him unconscious.Later his friends , aashaari and young guy finds thakaara across the shore , who is now fully filled with revenge on mathu mooppan (subhashinis fr.). Last he comes with a knife , bought with his earnings and kills mooppan . Subhashini refuses to go with Thakara , who proposes her after killing her dad. In no way to escape , Thakara finds his end infront of a running train. There are some scenes where we feel a lot of sympathy to the character of Thakara.

The scene where Thakara discovers sea ,is so touching. The romance between Thakara & Subhashini was so realistically taken by the director . Its sexy but not degrading.

a MUST WATCH movie for all who loves Malayalam Classics.

PIRAVI (1988)

Directed by SHAJI N KARUN
Cinematography : SUNNY JOSEPH
Music : G.Aravindan

The movie is inspired by the 'Rajan Case' that occurred in Kerala during the time of the emergency in 1978. Professor Eachara Warrier's story was the basis of this SHATTERINGLY powerful and TOTALLY TOUCHING Malayalam film Piravi(The Birth), the extraordinary directorial debut of Shaji Karun. Professor Warrier went through the greatest agony a parent can conceive of -- the loss of a child, and that too, not even being able to see his son's body one last time.
In the film , the rain is like the tears of the father.
The relation between brother and sister is also touching (even though the older Raghu, the missing son ,is never shown in the film ). The role of old father done by the actor "PREMJI" ( a very memorable & touching performance ) won him the Best Actor National award. Also this movie won Best Film & Best Director award in the 1989 National Film awards (Golden Lotus) .And MOST IMPORTANTLY this won the prestigious Golden Camera - Special Mention (Shaji N. Karun)at Cannes in 1989. Another major aspect of this movie is the excellent use of silence. The filmmakers used sound & music only where they are needed. The film is produced by the funding of NFDC , and is done with a small budget . This is one example where Budget is not important for making a good movie .

SARVAM (Tamil)

The movie has STYLE , but no punch.
The RR is great , the visuals are astonishing , the performances are well, BUT LACKS IN CONTENT.

The Team forget that apart from al these Stylising elements , CONTENT is the King.
In short SAJ is a palace without KING .

A beautifully Scripted movie , well photographed and fantastically directed .
The movie is perhaps the BEST THRILLER movie made in recent times. Special congrats to the Diretor and crew for giving us this movie which is worth watching ...
The work of P.C.Sreeram is fantastic. The ART also needs special mention . I loved the way the directed treated this horror subject , without any ghost images or CG works. Great work by a great crew .
Great news is that this movie rights are brought by a HOLLYWOOD COMPANY for remake in English .A whoping sum of 7 crores is paid for English rights alone.
Nearly 487 prints of this movie has been released .

I give 8.5/10 for this movie

RED CHILLIES

Directed by Shaji Kaillas

Cinematographed by : Shaji

Written by A.K.Sajan

The Film is technically good. The cinematography is nice. But Script wise the ressemblance to "Chinthamani Kola Case " makes it a lil cliche. Also the story is not well conveyed . The noticeable improvement in the work of cinematographer Shaji is appreciated . Also the Directorial touch of Mr. Shaji Kailas is well established. The Mannerisms of Mohanlal is also liked by his fans. But flows and repetition of story thread made this movie a lil dull. The ART is also good in this movie , especially in the first song...
I give 6.0/10 marks for this movie.
